Recent Data Privacy Breaches at Prep/High Schools:
(Updated 6/19/09)
Warren County Community School (Lebanon, Ohio)
A four-page list containing more than 140 students' names, addresses, social security numbers and birth dates (along with their parents' information) was found in a dumpster near the school.
Bailey Middle School (Nashville, Tennessee)
A person walking by the school finds paperwork containing dozens of students' names, social security numbers and disability records.
East Burke High School (Morganton, N. Carolina)
School's website exposed files containing confidential information, including names, social security numbers, and unlisted phone numbers of staff and employees. The breach existed for five years. Over 200 people were affected.
Many organizations will be subject to the FTC’s regulations, and they must have: procedures in place to spot red flags and prevent potential fraud, identity theft and money laundering.
A “knowing” violation of the rule provides a $2,500 civil penalty for each violation. This translates to a risk of $2,500 per each customer record – which doesn’t include the potential costs of an independent 3rd party audit for up to 20 years. Violators
may also be liable for damages in state courts, including civil actions
through the state attorney general’s office as well as individual
lawsuits and class actions.

Universities #1 Target for Privacy Data Breaches
- NonProfit Times, July 2007

Please See our 'Prevention Tip of the Week'
Simply put, we prevent privacy data breaches from happening on the inside. As much as breaches can occur from computer hacking, it more often happens because of the vulnerable avenues that lead to easy access of paperwork and documents containing personal identity information of employees, customers, clients, patients, students, vendors, members, applicants, etc.
UNLIKE victim recovery/restoration companies (credit report monitoring, fraud alert assistance, etc. which are intended for individual consumers), our firm was the first of its kind to recognize and address data breaches as originating mostly in places of business - as opposed to a stolen wallet or purse.
